Ted talk on "The Power of Inclusive Contemporary Art"
This week I decided to learn more about Inclusive Contemporary Art. I found that Inclusive Contemporary Art is very interesting, and I like the style that the inclusive Contemporary takes with it. I watched a TED Talk called The Power of Inclusive Contemporary Art by Aundrea Frahm. The TED Talk was released in March of 2018. Her TED Talk was very educational, and I learned more about Inclusive art.

How they viewed it back in history
The view opens with her asking what contemporary art is. Inclusive contemporary art is making a meaning, memorable and valuable for the everyday person. It can be out of the box and sometimes edgy. But then she gives us some background to where contemporary art came from and when it started showing in artist works. She dated back to the 19th century where all of the art pieces were beautiful and had a narrative to them. These art pieces told a story, and they had significant meaning to what was going on during that time period.
But then artists like Van Gogh, Degas and many other artists started to put their own touch to their paintings. They created feelings, emotions and mystery to their pieces. They made the art pieces out of the box and were edgy. During this time period these artist art pieces were considered different and contrasting from what other art pieces were like at that time.
How people look at art
A major takeaway from this TED Talk was when she was telling us how we can interpret a piece better. She gave us 4 steps we should take when looking at a piece. She gave this to us because some people have a hard time understanding what a piece means. But for contemporary art pieces the artist wants everyone to feel a different way about the piece. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to a contemporary piece.
Tips on how you can get more out of the artwork
Do your homework.
She says to look everything up before going and look at the art and what they are known for. She wants you to do some investigation about the specific exhibit you are going to and what artist and the meanings of some of their pieces. After you are done doing your homework when you get there you can interpret the piece for yourself better than if you didn’t know anything about the piece.
Take your time
Spend time with the work not just 3 seconds. You need to be able to look at it in all directions. You're not going to be able to see and process the piece and know more information about the piece if you only take a couple seconds or even minutes on it.
Ask Good Questions
She describes asking good questions like if you were on a date. Questions like what the meaning is, what can I take away from this for myself, what was the artist intending for me to see and etc. Everyone’s perception of the piece will be different. It will mean different things to different people and make others feel a different way than others.
Acknowledgement of all the pieces
Spend as much time with each piece and give each piece the same attention. Also give yourself permission to not like a piece. It is ok not to like a piece; everyone has different tastes and styles.
An example she made in the presentation
At the end of her presentation, she wanted the audience to really understand what an inclusive contemporary art piece looked like. So, she created a piece with the help of the audience. She asked everyone to grab their phones and turn the flashlight on. Once everyone had them on, she asked that they take their two fingers and cover the flashlight with them. This creates a beam of light coming from the phone's flashlight. The last direction she asked everyone to do was to go in different directions to make waves of light on the ceiling. It was truly amazing, and I feel like this really helped show the audience what inclusive contemporary art can be and that they create it tool
Final Thought
This TED Talk was very educational and really teaches others more about the power of inclusive contemporary art. This art is meaningful and creates a story to everyone that looks at it. The artist wants the art pieces to be meaningful, memorable and valuable. They want you to be able to think about these a couple days after looking at it.
If you're new to Inclusive Contemporary Art I highly recommend watching this TED Talk. It is only 16 minutes, and I promise you; you will not regret it.
